According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's National Center for Statistics and Analysis, in 2006, the total number of people injured in motor vehicle accidents exceeded 2.5 million, the majority of which were in passenger cars. The NHTSA's Annual assessment for 2006 revealed that approximately 42,000 people were killed due to motor vehicle accidents. Of those 42,000 fatalities, approximately 10% percent were teen drivers and five percent were people under the age of 16. New Jersey has over 37,000 miles of public roads. In New Jersey, the latest statistics for the first half of 2007 revealed that out of 347 motor vehicle accidents recorded by the New Jersey State Police, 372 fatalities resulted. These statistics are frightening despite state of the art air bags, recent laws enacted to require the wearing of seatbelts and the use of hands-free cell phones. Accidents happen, and when they do, the potential for devastation is great.
