NJHerald.com reports that Paul Amon, 62, of Bayville, N.J., was killed early this morning when the tugboat he was on hit a barge on the Hudson River and sank. Two crew members are still missing. No one on the barge was injured.
Authorities are still trying to determine where the tugboat may be on the bottom. They are also assessing whether it is safe to send down divers to search for the missing crew members.
The accident occurred near where the new Tappan Zee Bridge is being built. The tug, named the Specialist, was one of three pushing a barge from Albany to Jersey City.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. We will have more information on this accident as it becomes available.
Update: A second body has been recovered. The man’s name is Timothy Conklin of Westbury, Long Island. He was 29. The third man has not yet been found. He is 56 year old Harry Fernandez of Staten Island.
